Known For
Alaska is known for its world-class hunting opportunities and having over a dozen species of big game animals. With a size that is one-fifth of the entire United States, animals here make long movements between seasonal ranges. Alaska is where many hunters pursue moose, brown bears, muskox, and many other big animals.
Terrain
Alaska is famous for its incredible, craggy, high-altitude summits and 39 named mountain ranges, as well as its rugged, wild terrain. It is the largest state in the United States, encompassing 570,380 square miles. From Arctic tundras to small coastal communities, Alaska has it all.

Alaska does not have a point system and all tags are given away via a random drawing
For each species however, you may submit up to 6 entries into the drawing
Each entry will give you another chance to be drawn successfully
You can use all 6 of your species entries on the same hunt code, or you can apply for more than one hunt code per species
If you apply for more than one hunt code per species, you must specify which of those hunts are your 1st choice, 2nd choice, etc.
For example, you could apply for moose hunt code A with 3 of your entries (designated as your 1st choice), and apply for hunt code B with your remaining 3 entries as your 2nd choice
Applying with multiple species entries is optional; you can apply for a single species hunt code with just a single draw entry if you choose
Tag Allocation
There are no universal tag allocation rules when determining the split of tags issued to residents vs nonresidents
There are however some hunt codes that are specifically resident only, and some hunts that are nonresident only
If a hunt code is not designated as resident or nonresident only, all applicants are in the same drawing for those tags and thus will have the same draw odds
Understanding the Draw Odds
In Alaska, we include 1 draw odds column in our List View
The odds shown are for a single applicant, single entry
If you apply as a group, your draw odds are slightly less than if you apply on your own
Applying for the same hunt code multiple times (multiple entries) will increase your odds to draw
Alaska Licenses, Permits and Regulations
Alaska hunting licenses, permits, and regulations for resident and non-resident hunters can be purchased on the State of Alaska Department of Fish and Game website. Click below to view the website.
Every Alaska hunter should have hunting GPS maps on hand. Alaska hunting maps are available from onX Hunt. With a paid membership you can access Satellite, Topo, or Hybrid Basemaps, over which you can view maps of game management units, along with State, Forest Service, and other public and private property boundaries. You can view trails and roads, and even download maps to the Hunt App for use offline. Click below to get onX Hunt for Alaska.
Alaska has 26 distinct game management units (GMUs) for conservation and managing wildlife. Each one has specific hunting and trapping restrictions and limits. Some GMUs are world reknown for their game. GMU 20, for instance, has the largest moose density in the state, and GMU 24 is managed specifically to offer a maximum hunting opportunity for sheep. Click below to view Alaska’s game management units in more detail through an interactive map.
Over 260,000 parcels mapped by the onX team, this layer helps you know who the property owners are in Alaska. Tap any parcel to learn more info about the owner and acreage.
