Overview
Known For
Hunters travel to Hawaii to pursue Axis deer and feral hogs. Axis deer, a non-native subspecies also known as spotted deer, were introduced to the island of Linai in 1867. By 1959 they were on Maui. By 2009 they were on the Big Island too. Some islands also have game birds, black-tailed deer, and Mouflan sheep.
Terrain
Hawaii’s varied terrain includes plateaus, ocean cliffs, tropical coastal areas, volcanoes, lava deserts, and fern and bamboo forests. There are eight major islands and 137 islands total that make up the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaii Hunting Seasons
Hunt Units 1 & 2. Any weapon. Tag required. Hawaii recommends calling before you hunt to check for any changes and closures.
Hunt Unit A, Muzzleloader only. One antlered buck, fork horn or better. Hawaii recommends calling before you hun to check for changes and closures.
Hunt Unit B and L. One deer of either sex. Hawaii recommends calling before you hunt to check for changes and closures.
Hunt Unit A and B. Any Weapon. Seven (7) consecutive weekends, lottery. Through September 14 to October 27 2019. See regulations for bag limits. Hawaii recommends calling before you hunt to check for closures and changes.
Hunt Units C-G. Other regulations apply to specific units. Hawaii suggests you use the linked document to determine hunt dates and call before you depart to hunt to ensure no changes have occurred.

Game Management Units
Hawaii’s game management areas (GMAs) vary by island and species. There are six different GMAs on Hawaii Island. Each GMA is further divided into game management units (GMUs): A, B, C, etc. Each area and unit has different species regulations, quotas, and possibly different season dates.
