Trail Overview

Gateway is an intermediate single track in Hartman Rocks with a mix of easy dirt trails and moderate rock slab features. There are some flat rock slab sections in the beginning (going west to east) that are very easy, followed by a fast and flowy trail through the sagebrush mesas, with lots of curves. As you go east, there are some small ledges (6"tall) up uneven rock layers. You ride past cool rock outcroppings and need to watch out for road crossings, and sudden dips and whoops. The second half has some more interesting and technical features. You must ride down a section of narrow slab that goes right along a narrow shelf of rock next to a rock wall. There are another couple of rock slab sections with small ledges, but it's all still mostly easy/moderate for the average rider.

Access Description

The Hartman Rocks Recreation Area, in Gunnison, Colorado, has about 50 miles of singletracks ranging from easy to advanced. It's a high-traffic area, and the trails are multi-use with mountain bikers and hikers. There is a large Day Use parking area at the entrance to Kill Hill Road, and there are 50 dry/primitive designated camping spots within the recreation area. There is decent Verizon cell signal throughout the rec area. It can get pretty hot here in the summer. The trails are typically closed during the mud season to protect the routes as they dry out but are typically opened around May each year. Trails south of the Powerline Road are closed March 15 - May 15 for sage grouse conservation. The area is very well marked and maintained, with trail markers and difficulty levels indicated at the entrance to every trail.
