Trail Overview
This is the cliffside section of Bethel Ridge. It is the most technical because the road gets bumpy as it transitions from a Forest Service gravel road into rocky basalt and dirt (and often mud). This section alternates between open areas meandering along the cliff with amazing views to tight and twisty turns among the trees. Expect to fold in a mirror here or there, and expect to get muddy unless you visit in late summer. There is a herd of mountain goats that live below the road in the basalt cliffs. Bring your binoculars and keep your eyes peeled for specs of white on the black rocks in the distance. This section is at 6000', so don't expect access until late June or early July. This area was devastated by wildfire in the Summer of 2021 so expect significant blowdown after each winter storm. Bring a chainsaw or be prepared to turn back.
