Trail Overview

Blakey Ridge Fire Trail Runs along the edge of the Shenandoah National Park on one side of the trail. There are three entry points, the first off Aylor Rd. in the Robertson District, the second from the Burnt Ridge Fire Trail, and the third point connects directly to the Lower Rapidan Trail on Rapidan Rd. The trail offers both gradual ascents and descents up to 12% in grade that wind through the Blue Ridge Mountains. This is a point-to-point trail, that also ties into the Lower Rapidan Trail. There is a large parking area at the juncture of Blakey Ridge Trail and the Lower Rapidan Trail. There is spotty to no cell service and you will find increased popularity of this trail as it gets closer to the Rapidan River.

Difficulty

This is a dirt or rocky road, typically unmaintained after rain or snow. You may encounter shallow water crossings and obstacles under 12 inches on the trail, including small ledges. Roads are typically one to two vehicles wide. After it rains or snows, there are plenty of shallow water holes that can be fun and easily traversed by 4WD vehicles.

Blakey Ridge is very similar to Burnt Ridge, but a tad bit easier. There was one rocky incline that stood out from the rest of the trail. While there are several places that tease a view, there was one spot where some power lines come through that does offer a nice view. I went a day after a thunderstorm had come through and the trail was already mostly dry with only a few puddles. Mud was not a concern. There are several places with exposed rock but there is usually plenty of room to avoid them if needed. Blakey is a bit flatter than Burnt Ridge with less chance of high centering for those with longer wheelbases. About 3/4 up the trail there was a fallen tree completely blocking the trail. I managed to drag it out of the way and continue. Fallen trees are common on both trails so be prepared to either deal with them, or to turn around. Overall this is a nice trail, especially for beginners as it offers enough to excite, but not all that difficult. It may be a tad more challenging north to south.

Loose rocks on kinda steep climbs (i was in 4lo because i’m also on street tires) and it is pretty tight on some areas leaving space for only 1 vehicle (barely) coulle pinstripes here and there but at the end of the day super fun todo, also be aware of people riding mountain bikes

Trial was rocky and had lots of water holes to run through or dodge. Lots of nice elevation climbs along the way. Had to stop two times to remove logs and branches fallen across the trail. Nice run up to Rapidan Road. Wish I had know that Rapidan Road was locked. I would have liked to continue traveling to Skyline Drive.
