Backdoor to Babylon Loop

Trail Overview

Whether the Backdoor to Babylon Trail is crowded, and you want to avoid the traffic, or you're just looking for a different way around, this loop takes you through BLM lands and rejoins Backdoor to Babylon a little further down the trail. Getting off of the main trail is the best way to see some of the hidden gems in this area of Southern Utah. There is a rocky steep climb when you first leave Backdoor to Babylon Trail, and then you get out onto the sagebrush mesa with views to the north of the Dixie National Forest. And trails out here are endless. Beware, some of them will take you into rock formations you have to crawl over, with drops and inclines that will test your skid plate. This trail is easy, it's sandy and just another way around. Bring extra fuel when you ride in Red Cliffs Recreation Area. There is so much to see. You can hike to the Old Toquerville Mine, which gives some history of this area. You can hike to the Arch, which is a cool trail that takes you through the red rock formations. You can hike to Sand Cove or Sandstone Mountain. Opportunities to explore are numerous. These red cliffs and red rock formations give wonderful places to stop for a picnic. The trail is wide enough for our 72" CanAm. To find this trail, from Leeds or Toquerville, you take North Old Highway 91, which is the frontage road along the interstate. You take it to the Red Cliffs Rec Area to Virgin River Trail. Follow that trail down to the Backdoor to Babylon Trail, and turn left. From there, you can find either end of this loop. Starting Feb 2023, Utah began enforcement of their new law, which requires an online education course for all off-roaders. The free course is available online. Google "Utah OHV Education Course," and the free test will pop up. It's an easy test that will only take 15-30 minutes, and it's required for all off-roaders, Jeeps, SXSs, dirt bikes, and ATVs. Kids under the age of 18 will have to take the Youth Education Test at the same site. After completing the test, print out the certificate to carry with you which shows you completed the course. We have taken it, and it's really no big deal. Good reminders about trail etiquette and trail preservation.

Difficulty

There is a steep incline/decline in this loop. It's a mix of sand but there are significant amounts of rocks in the trail. Otherwise, fairly easy.
