Trail Overview

Starting in Highland, 1n16 is a fairly easy dirt road with some parts rutted out, but any 4x4 can make it through the trail easily. Many parts of the trail are single-vehicle wide, but there are plenty of places to pass along the way. Coming from Highland, the trail ends on 1n16, giving you the choice to exit towards Highway 330 or the longer part of the trail to Seven Oaks and the 38 with more trails connecting up to Big Bear. This trail gives you great views over the Inland Empire and a consistent climb into the San Bernardino mountains for the start of a quick trip up the mountain, or a long day on the trails enjoying the area.

Difficulty

Generally single-vehicle wide with plenty of places to pass. Currently being very rutted out causing any low clearance vehicles to have some problems if choosing a poor line.

Trail closed until November 30, 2024 per Forest Order No. 05-12-00-24-09.

Didn’t get the chance to get on the trail. Gate was closed and don’t know what time it will open or how many days will it be closed for.

Trail is mostly very beginner friendly with small sections that are slightly more difficult with some deeper ruts. Not much vegetation overgrown, so you'll not get too many scratches. Very many gorgeous views all along the way. Can easily be combined with 1N09 City Creek Trail to the left (same difficulty).

First time ever going off-road, this was a great choice for a trail. First few miles are typical clear fire road, then it had plenty of challenges with ruts and uneven path. Pinstriping is definitely possible but I was able to avoid it even in a full size truck. Would not recommend going without 4x4 as some sections were pretty gnarly, but it’s probably possible. Afterwards I headed west on 1N09 which was a complete breeze compared to this trail, besides a few narrow sections. If your equipment is capable I would say this is great for newbies, there is plenty of spaces to turn around if you get overwhelmed, but every mile is very rewarding.
