Trail Overview

Pilot Rock OHV offers spectacular views and water crossings along the hills near Silverwood Lake and Arrowhead Lake. Some of the surrounding cities include Lugo, Hesperia, and Apple Valley. It can take 1 to 4 hours to complete. If you didn't experience any SoCal traffic on the way to the trail, you might encounter some here. Watch for recreational vehicles (dirt bikes, ATVs, Polaris, etc.) and drive slowly around corners since parts of the trail are one-way. Tread lightly. Cell phone service can vary based on your provider and mobile device. You may experience drops in service along the way. Remember to download the trail to your offline maps in your app.

Difficulty

This trail is all about options. Its technical rating can range from "easy" (if you stick to the fire road) to "extremely difficult," depending on which route you take. The fire road trail is easy enough for high-clearance 2WD vehicles, but 4WD is recommended because certain parts are uneven and rutted with the potential for loose rocks. The optional obstacle bypasses that follow the fire road can challenge even the most experienced off-roaders with heavily modified 4x4 lifted vehicles because of the off-camber hard lines, deep holes, and steep grades. Please exercise extreme caution if you decide to take the advanced option alone. Use a spotter if you have a passenger.
