Trail Overview
This is a well-maintained gravel road that has a mixture of pavement in some areas. Once passing several homes and private property, the road becomes dirt and less maintained until reaching the Oil City Trailhead. This is a fun road that gives revealing views of the Hoh River and surrounding mountains. Hike the Oil City Trail through Olympic National Park to the Pacific Coast if time permits. It passes through dense old-growth temperate rainforests with views of the Hoh River before reaching the confluence of the Hoh River and the Pacific Ocean. If your timing is right, you may experience a salmon run.

History
Oil City was actually a planned off-shore oil drilling location and city that never came to be. Along some sections of the hiking trail, buried utility lines have been revealed from the eroding Hoh River Banks, showing what could have been.
