Big Piney

Lovely wet day. Only saw one other vehicle. Wet but nice. Water rushing fast and beautiful.

Really relaxed easy ride. First time out on Big Piney, open your windows and enjoy the sound of the water in a number of places! You definitely don’t need 4WD. We had maybe encountered four or five other trucks on the road, so take it slow around some blind corners. There’s plenty of places to pull to the side to let someone by safely. It’s a quick and beautiful trip, I would consider exploring the other trails that connect to Big Piney, otherwise if you’re coming from the DC area it might feel like you could have chosen other fire roads. However. I enjoyed Big Piney very much.

Took it from east to west, ending at Coffeytown Rd. Lots of camping sites filled with fall foliage and everyone waved as we went by. It’s in great shape. Nice trail with overlooks if you follow the AT at Salt Log Gap toward Hog Camp and Mount Pleasant. There’s a small parking area at the intersection of Wiggins Springs Rd
