Trail Overview

This 19.1-mile loop trail takes you deep into the Olympic National Forest backcountry. This is my favorite trail in the Olympic National Forest. Many waterfalls along the trail and amazing views of the Wynoochee River valley. Most of this trail is a 2-rated trail, between 5.4 and 10 miles the trail skirts along a high cliff with scree fields crossing the trail in multiple locations which can be difficult for passing by inexperienced drivers giving this trail its 4 rating. There is also a lot of overgrowth along this trail. Snow can be present on the trail as late as mid-July.

Rocks have eroded leaving very steep slopes, would highly recommend airing down. 3 moderately hard obstacles, but after those very easy trail

The morning rain gave way to a beautiful day with the sun peeking through by the early afternoon, so the trail conditions were wet but the trail drained well overall. This was the most scenic trail I have found in the Olympics and was just technical enough to make it a very enjoyable trip. A couple of loose rocky spots were encountered with adjacent steep drop offs but nothing that felt risky if met with a little common sense and a slow approach. We took the counter clockwise direction and would recommend that plan if your passenger is a bit timid about steep drop-offs. This trail is definitely a must do if exploring the trails of the Olympic Peninsula.

Most of the trail up isn't bad, but there are some areas that have been washed away, leaving some pretty deep ruts on the side of the road. There are a few Rock Falls that have covered the trail, but they are easily passable with four-wheel drive and patience. There are some beautiful waterfalls and river areas to check out along the way.

If you’re out exploring the Olympic National Forest this is the road that paints the picture! beautiful views, waterfalls, lookouts, and more. I did this trip with a buddy of mine and everything went smooth. We stopped at the Wynoochee waterfall and hiked into Discovery lake. The road is what’s expected in the pictures with 2 washouts along the way and some rutted out parts in the road. This loop is definitely worth looking into with it being exceptionally easy with a bit of challenge along the way!
