Trail Overview
The Sand Bar Loop is one of several trails within the Outlaw Trail System in and around Vernal, Utah. This 3.3-mile point-to-point trail rate is used both during the Vernal Rock Rally and the Outlaw ATV Jamboree. The Rock Rally is focused on full-size 4x4 vehicles and rates the trail a 4 of 10 while the Outlaw ATV Jamboree focuses on ATV/UTVs and rates the trail a 7 of 10. Sand Bar Trail boasts some of the amazing sandstone surfaces of the area. With inclines and declines that will test your blood pressure, the surfaces along the Sand Bar trail have incredible traction that will leave you shocked your 4x4 climbed such steep hills with ease. This area has a perfect view of the Vernal Valley in the distance to the south. Despite being sandstone, the trail is pretty sticky, so you'll have traction even if it doesn't look like it. This one is rated a four for difficulty. While you're up on some of those ledges, take a few minutes to soak up the scenery. The first major obstacle along the trail is called Turtle Rock. This is a playground of ascents and descents. Although the track just crosses the rock, take the time to explore this playground. Please note that the eastern half of the rock is private property, so make sure you stay west of the boundary on the map. There is a superb view of unique formations you won't find anywhere else. Keep your eyes peeled for eagles and falcons, maybe even deer or cougars. Cell phone service coverage is good and the nearest services of all types are located in Vernal.
