Trail Overview

Gamble Oak is a 2.2-mile single-track trail that makes a semi-loop with Poker Chip and Mahogany. The north end starts off with Poker Chip and starts out super easy in a gamble oak forest. It crosses several intersections, all of which all well marked, so the trail is easy to follow. It starts to have small embedded rocks and boulders, but all are easy to ride over. There are a couple of larger moderate rock obstacles/ledges on the south end before intersecting with Mahogany. They are like small stair steps or chunky faces of boulders. There are lots of smooth sections between the obstacles that are very easy, fast, and flowy. The forest here is really pretty, with thick tall pine trees and lots of small oak shrubs that are pretty in autumn.

Access Description

The Manzanita Mountain Trail System is a very well-maintained multi-use area popular for hiking, horses, mountain biking, and dirt bikes. There are 40+ trails ranging from a mile to 5 miles long of varying difficulties between easy and advanced in a Chihuahuan desert terrain in the Cibola National Forest. There are enough trails for 2-3 days of riding, and it's best in fall and spring when it's not too hot. Be aware of oncoming traffic since there are lots of tight turns and it can be busy. There are several staging areas from the north off of Chamiso Canyon Road, as well as the Tunnel and Pine Flat Trailheads along State Road 337, and from the south at the Oak Flat Trailhead.
