Trail Overview

Beginning at the eastern end of the loop, this trail starts off with a lightly sandy surface, offering an easy, manageable drive. A few miles in, you'll encounter an arroyo section with sand depths exceeding 12 inches; however, if you spot the faint track to the left, there's a go-around option. Beyond the arroyo, the trail ascends a gradual hill with 2 to 4 inches of sand--requiring you to maintain speed, lower tire pressure, and use four-wheel drive. This area is rich in desert wildlife, and you may catch a glimpse of desert foxes alongside impressive vegetation like El Cordon and Boojum trees, enhancing the rugged beauty of the landscape. Reaching the plateau, the sand reduces to just an inch or two, making for a smooth, scenic stretch. The trail then gently descends for several miles, firming up as it approaches Highway 12, with no further notable obstacles.

Difficulty

This route is relatively straightforward, earning a difficulty rating of three solely due to a short, deep-sand wash that requires careful navigation. Outside of this section, the trail is uncomplicated, but familiarity with sand driving techniques--especially airing down your tires--is essential. Four-wheel drive is highly recommended to ensure a smooth passage through the sandy wash, making this a manageable trail for those equipped and prepared for desert terrain.
