Trail Overview

This 2-mile-long ATV trail rides along the west perimeter of the Penrose Commons Recreation Area. The southern beginning is pretty easy, just curving through the pinyon pine on a smoother trail. It gets rockier later as it starts ascending steeply up the mesa, with more loose rock in the trail, and embedded slickrock. It gets shelfy and narrow as it goes underneath a really scenic cliff wall for a short section. There are a lot of easy sections on top of the mesa as it goes straight and fast with no obstacles. There are some steeper hills at the north end as it descends steeply with a few switchbacks and small rock ledges, and then switchbacks back up to the north trailhead. This is probably the hardest part of the trail, other than the few rock ledges within the route.

Difficulty

This is an intermediate ATV route due to steep climbs and descents with steep and loose switchbacks, and several 1-foot tall rock ledges throughout the route which will require some experience and skill.

Access Description

The Penrose Commons Recreation Site is popular for ATVs, dirt bikers, and extreme four-wheeling. It's rideable year-round but gets really hot here in the summer, and gets closed during wet conditions. There is a dirt parking area at the end of County Road 127 north of the town of Penrose, Colorado. There is space for trailer parking and dispersed campsites past the staging area.
