Trail Overview
Turning off from the main highway, there are about 8 miles of private land you have to get through before reaching BLM. At about mile 7 is a seasonal closure gate: "From December 1 to May 30 road is closed to vehicles over 50" wide to protect soft roadbed. It remains open to vehicles less than 50" wide, hikers, and horses." There is a cattle guard that marks the end of private land and the beginning of BLM. There are a half dozen little forest trail off-shoots within the several miles of BLM - great for ATVs and such. Mile 14 is when you will reach the Uncompahgre National Forest gate. Seasonal closures apply to all motorized vehicles.
