Trail Overview
BLM Route 165 is designated for dirt bikes but is mostly a whooped-out, road-width dirt trail that follows a power line. It's smooth dirt, with no rock, but has huge whoops the whole way. It goes through a landscape of rolling hills at the base of the North Fruita Desert with the Book Cliffs and colorful desert mesas in the distance. This is the first trail accessed from the staging area on 18 2/10 Road, so it appears to get a lot of use from dirt bikers and mountain bikers, but for no apparent reason, because there are plenty of other single-track trails to choose from with far less whoops and much less wide. The trail could be used as a connector to get from 18 road to 16 road. At the end, it crosses the intersection with spur 165A, then crosses a dirt road and has another small section before it ends. The Spur 165A is a similar road-width trail with lots of whoops. The only thing making this trail slightly more difficult is a big ditch crossing in the beginning that had a foot of water in a high-snow pack year in the middle of April during high runoff. This ditch likely will be dry in other years with less snowpack, or other times of the year. The water crossing was smooth and easy even though it looked like the water was moving fast. There is dispersed camping on the BLM land in the staging area right at the beginning of this trail, which can be busy, especially on weekends.
