Trail Overview
Sportsman Road (Forest Service Road 897) is a scenic, 5.5-mile trail consisting of mostly rocks with some dry soil terrain. The trail has beautiful views of surrounding mountains as you traverse through the site of the Hayman Wildfire, which took place in 2002. At the time, this was the largest wildfire in Colorado's history. As you witness nature slowly rebuilding its forest, you may find several species of birds and herds of deer. The trail is very well maintained and fits a full-size vehicle comfortably without the risk of scratches. There are no major obstacles on the trail with mild and occasional off-camber. There's a small section of the trail that goes along a shelf road but is unnoticeable while driving. The road ends at an intersection where additional trails continue, such as Forest Service Road 202 and Old Stage Forest Service Road 220. There are no visible campsites and no available toilets on the trail.
