Trail Overview

This trail is located within the Dinner Island Ranch Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The trail features a gate at the northern trailhead that must be manually opened and closed. There may be cattle actively on the road, so exercise care to ensure cattle remain behind gates and the gates are securely closed after entering and exiting the trailhead. The trail is an unimproved dirt and mud trail that is bordered by wetlands and cow pastures. The road could become unpassable to low clearance or 2WD vehicles when conditions are wet or following storms. The trail is deeply rutted in some areas with some pockets of soft sand or potential sticky mud. The width of the trail varies, the northern half can be wide enough for two vehicles. The southern leg is narrow in many spots and wide enough only for a single vehicle and little or no room for pull-offs for passing. Pulling off could result in sliding down embankments into swamp or wetland areas. There is no maintenance of the trail, except lots of cabins roll through some segments. Obstructions up to 12" may be encountered at times due to the trail being unimproved. Small metal signs approximately 4"x4" with the number 10 are attached on posts at key locations to help identify the trail and aid in navigation. Per the FWC website, currently, there is no daily usage fee to access the WMA. Wildlife observation opportunities abound. This area is part of the Florida Panther habitat. There is a possibility of observing a variety of wildlife (e.g. Whitetail Deer, Wild Hogs, Panthers, Coyote, Bobcats, Cranes, Storks, Water Birds, Bald Eagles, snakes, etc.). There are also active agriculture and ranch operations along the management lands. Cattle may be seen on or along this trail. This is an active WMA, the area has several open hunting seasons starting late summer and extending through Spring.
