Trail Overview

This southern segment of Five Mile Creek is a 2.3-mile spur off of Peach- Cinnabar. Although it requires technical experience for several challenging sections, it could be used as a bailout from Peach-Cinnabar as the shortest route to drop down Highway 75 if needing a bailout from the advanced single track. The south end ends on a Jeep road that could be taken down to Clayton. The north end starts in a wide open meadow, following several stacked-up piles of cairns. It starts side-hilling down the mountainside, going through steep spots and sections with significant exposure. Sometimes, there are big dips into troughs on the inside corner when it traverses around the mountainsides. There are also several downed trees, sometimes hanging 5 feet over the trail, that you must duck for. Many downed logs have been cut, but there's always the potential for more logs to have fallen at any time. The trail dips in and out of small rocky stream crossings and becomes more overgrown in the bushes in sections that make you pick your way through the bushes. It also cuts across unique scree fields, but not hard, because the scree is all packed down and flat. Overall, this trail is slightly more accessible than the northern segment of Five Mile Creek and easier than Peach-Cinnabar, but it still has constant tricky features that will keep you on your toes. Please be on the lookout for moose in the area. This trail is open 7/1 - 9/30 for motorized use.
