Trail Overview

Fourth of July is a 2.5-mile long trail along Fourth of July Creek off of the Custer Motorway that is a fun spur to explore for UTVs/ATVs/dirtbikes while checking out the Custer Townsite or the Gold Dredge. Narrow spots with bushes lining both sides of the trail like a tunnel make this trail less suitable for full-width vehicles. Immediately, it goes through bushy sections that are very tight. They are soft bushes, but full-size vehicles probably wouldn't make it through without extreme pinstriping, especially because there are downed logs later on that aren't cut wide enough for full-size vehicles. It goes through a downfall area with lots of logs down, that are only cut to UTV or dirt bike width. Watch out for logs hiding in the bushes too that you could accidentally hit if not paying attention. The trail has 6-inch deep stream crossings that are easy, and lots of water trickling down the trail. It is constantly covered in loose shale-type rocks. It has a couple of switchbacks that aren't too tight as it climbs up, gaining 1,200 feet elevation, and then it ends at a mine. The end is marked as private property and has been gated off. Thus the trail does not make a loop with Lucky Boy and has to be ridden as an out and back. You can turn around at the mine.

Difficulty

Although this trail is not particularly technical, it is very narrow in places as it is tightly lined with bushes on both sides, which would make it more difficult or not suitable for full-width 4x4 vehicles. It's constantly covered in small rock and scree, but doesn't have any specific obstacles. It also has steep climbs that add to the difficulty. This trail is more suitable for UTVs and ATVs.
