Trail Overview

This 5-mile segment of the Hay Knapp Creek Single Track goes between the Valley Single Track and the Basin Butte Red Mountain Road and is of more intermediate/challenging difficulty. It's a constant climb up from the north end for the first 4 miles, then a gradual descent for the last mile, ending with a nice view of Hindman Lake. It starts in a burn area and with a small stream crossing. The beginning has a lot of water bars in the trail on the ascent (logs across the trail to prevent erosion) that you have to get up and over. There's also quite a bit of embedded rocks in the climbs, making it more technical. It has tight switchbacks while climbing. Once the trail gets you on top of the ridgeline, it's a bit more fast and flowy, although still very narrow. There are a lot of small loose and embedded rocks that make it pretty bumpy. You'll also find small mud puddles, tight turns through the burnt trees, and the potential for downed logs in the burn area. It's a pretty dry area that will be very dusty in the summer, but it leaves the burn area and goes into more pine trees with small stream crossings. One of the stream crossings is more technical with roots across the trail, rocks, and ruts. There is a more difficult hill climb near the east end that is steep with lots of loose small rocks. The trail can also be shelfy as it traverses the mountainsides. This is a fun one to combine with West Fork Yankee Fork for a more challenging ride.
