Trail Overview
To connect to NF 221 - C/FDR Grangeville - Salmon Road, Turn East off Hwy 95 onto NFD 1614/Big Salmon Road and proceed 9.8 miles. This road is pavement. Before reaching Allison Creek Campground, there is a large sandy area on the right side of the road with ample room for unloading and loading offroad vehicles. NF 221 is about 170 yards and across Big Salmon Road. The road is maintained sand. The first few miles are through a ranch, so watch for livestock and farm equipment that may be on the road. This is a moderately busy road, as it accesses many camping areas and eventually comes out at Grangeville, Idaho. The first 6.3 miles are open year-round. The rest of the road is open from April 2nd to November 30th. This 17.5-mile segment is from NFD 1614/Big Salmon Road to FR 441/Nut Basin Road. The road surface is mainly sand and dirt, with a few small rocks. There are turns and switchbacks as you climb altitude through pine trees and low shrubs. Take time to pull over and enjoy views of the surrounding valleys and the Big Salmon River. Use caution going around blind corners, as this is a well-traveled road. Also, watch for fallen trees and limbs if storms have recently been through the area. This road goes through the Nez Perce National Forest and under the Salmon River Ranger District.
