Trail Overview

Prospect is one of a few single tracks accessed off of Slate Peak ATV trail in the Saint Joe National Forest south of Wallace, Idaho. From the west end, it drops down a shelfy exposed hillside with loose rock and embedded rock, then goes into the pine trees. The beginning is rocky and shelfy, with crazy exposure, followed by several tight switchbacks. You get great views on the wide-open hillsides. It goes into a lush jungle-like forest. It rains here in the spring and summer, and the trail will likely be trickier if wet and slippery. You side-hill down a shelfy trail in the trees for 3 miles, losing 2,400 feet of elevation. It's a gradual descent, but lots of roots and water bars in the trail would make it more difficult on the way back up. It comes out to a view along Slate Creek, which is a wide river that you'll have to cross to get to Slate Creek Road. The water can be pretty high in the late spring and early summer, so it may be better to start your ride on the east side so you know what the water level is. It can be relatively shallow by mid-summer though. This appears to be a higher-use trail, as there are rutted split lines at times.

Difficulty

The difficulty is from a combination of narrowness, tight switchbacks, and a steep constant climb with roots that could make it pretty difficult, plus a big river crossing. Please tread lightly and be cautious of high water levels at the river crossing.
