Trail Overview
Whelan Lake Trail (NFS 6661/6716) is an easy off-road trail located just a few miles south of U.S. 10, making this route easily accessible. The trail is an out-and-back route that twists through the Manistee National Forest and is very easy with nothing technical. Like most Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause mud/water holes that can get rutted out quickly. Most of this track is only wide enough for 1 vehicle. There are a few pull-off spots for passing, though. Regardless of the conditions, this is a trail that should be experienced at least once to take in its sincere beauty. There are many other trails nearby to explore as well. At the end of this trail, you'll come across Whelan Lake where there are backcountry campsites. The campsites overlook the lake from a small hill above, which leaves a great view of the lake. You won't be disappointed in checking out this trail, especially if you plan to camp here.
