Trail Overview
This wide, well-maintained gravel and dirt trail runs along Hegben Lake. Some sections of the trail have a bit of bumpy washboard. Most lake access is from established campgrounds and designated dispersed camping areas. Most of the trail runs along the lake but above it in the trees. The best views of the lakes are from the campgrounds and 2-day-use/ picnic areas. The first campground on the lake is Lonesome Hurst, and it has a boat launch and two cute docks to walk out on. There can be lots of mosquitoes at this lake. The trail ends at the Watkins Creek Hiking Trailhead. One dispersed campsite at the hiking trailhead. There is also some dispersed camping on the lake at Rambaugh Ridge, approximately halfway down and at the end of Spring cr. The dispersed camping at Spring cr is very rutted and muddy to get to. There are plenty of other established campgrounds for about $16 a night along the trail. This large, beautiful lake is a little removed from the hustle of west Yellowstone. There are two bars of LTE Cell service in the area.
