Trail Overview
Skalkaho Rye is an effortless drive/ride. The road starts on Skalkaho Highway shortly before the first winter gate. The road begins as a relatively flat gravel road with a few sections of washboards and potholes. You will then climb at a pretty good rate for a short time until reaching the middle section. In this first section, while climbing, the road narrows slightly. The middle section is overall flat and now in perfect shape as of summer 2024. This section is smooth and wide in almost all spots to pass another vehicle, as is most of the road. There are plenty of good views to stop and check out. This road's final section is where you will be coming down in elevation pretty quickly. This section of the road isn't quite as good of a shape as the rest and will be the reason for a 2 rating. It is slightly narrower than the rest and more washed out from runoff than the rest. However, it is still easy to drive. You have to go a little bit slower. This road will take you from Hamilton, MT, to Connor, MT, just south of Darby, MT.

Difficulty
This trail is very easy as the road has been recently graded and graveled as of the summer of 2024. There are still some sections of rocks all under 6" in diameter that have fallen onto the road. The first section and the last section aren't in quite as good of shape as the center section, however, it is still easy. The middle section is very easygoing and smooth. If there is snow on this road it could make it significantly more difficult to drive.
