Trail Overview
Abiquiu Dam trail starts with a short paved section at the top of the dam and works its way down some switchbacks to the base of the dam where the road turns to dirt. This trail follows along the western bank of the Chama River below Abiquiu Reservoir. The entire area has several interesting sites, like Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu Reservoir, and Echo Amphitheater, to name a few. The trail offers several sites for fishing, camping, and picnicking along the shores of the Chama River shaded by riverside cottonwoods. The southern third of the trail momentarily diverts away from the river through some colorful foothills and rejoins the river again towards the end. The trail ends where the pavement begins again near the town of Abiquiu.

Difficulty
Abiquiu Dam is an easy trail with some rutted sections, some areas with a bit of loose rock, and some minor off-camber spots. The trail can get incredibly muddy with snowmelt and after heavy precipitation. The ruts that exist for the majority of the trail provide evidence of such.
