Trail Overview
Dunes Drive is an exciting and easy drive through White Sands National Park to experience the ancient gypsum dune field. The "sand" is hard-packed gypsum crystals and can easily be driven in a low clearance 2wd. Many people bring waxed sleds for sliding down the soft dunes throughout the park. Covered picnic areas can be found along the North East loop with charcoal grills and pit toilets. Driving off the designated route is prohibited. Bring plenty of water and snacks it can get warm quickly from the reflected heat off the dunes. Be aware of the weather it can change quickly.
