Trail Overview
Forest Road 227 in the Cibola NF begins south of the Box Recreation Area. Box Canyon Road will lead you to the beginning of a scenic and unique trail that starts off consisting of a gentle two-track and ends in much narrower but passable conditions. This road sees minimal vehicle traffic near a busy recreational area known for its rock climbing. The two track seems to have been erased over time but is still plenty visible to ensure you are staying on the trail. As the trail progresses it becomes steeper and narrower. No clearance issues in a midsized 4x4 truck but a full-size truck may find some of the trail a bit narrow as vegetation encroaches. There are small rock obstacles and a few steep and loose short climbs, most any stock 4x4 would find no problems on this trail. Plenty of wildlife and views across the canyons on this out-and-back trail make the detour from Box Canyon Road worth the visit.
