Trail Overview
Starting in the flats of the Plains of San Austin, Sargent Canyon leads to Forest Road 549 passing through the Very Large Array and offering a chance to see the dishes from the road. Easily accessed from the Array Loop, Forest Road 476 heads south into the Cibola National Forest. You'll see views of vast canyons, mixed pine and oak, rock formations, and varied wildlife, including mule deer, elk, turkey, and even Abert's squirrel. The road is well-defined and easy to travel, with a few spots of loose rock towards the final climb to the gate before FR 549. There's a variety of dispersed camping opportunities in the area; always tread lightly.
