Trail Overview
Finley Butte sits at an elevation of 4,747 feet and is a 2-mile bumpy washboard road that leads to the top of an old Lava Butte. Here there is a large camping area with plenty of space for parking several rigs. The views face west so you get these beautiful sunsets that fall over the Cascade Mountain Range and it's an incredible sight to see. This road is very steep so trailers are not suggested, especially at the top due to the tight and steep loop to the camping area. Camping is dispersed with no water or restrooms and is pack it in pack it out rules. There is a nice shaded area over the campsite that allows very little sun to come in during the day which is good during the summer months. If you are visiting for some quick photos, there is another area just down the road that has an area to park so you can go and explore the lava mounds that are close by. South Lava OHV staging area can be found just down the road from Finley Butte. Finley Butte is a part of the Deschutes National Forest which encompasses 1.6 million acres of forestland. You are likely to spot Bald Eagles, deer, lizards, bobcats, mountain lions, several species of birds, sage brush, and Ponderosa Pine trees. Be mindful of rattlesnakes in this area as well during the warmer months. They can be found sunning themselves on rocks.
