Trail Overview
This trail is a perfect way to get up into the Steens Mountains from Alvord valley below. It starts as a well-maintained gravel trail and becomes a short shelf road with a few steep sections. The view of the upper valley when one crests the top is outstanding. Once on top, a vast network of trail fans is out for the adventurer to explore the area. There are plenty of wild horses and all kinds of wildlife during different times of the year. One should be wary, though, as fall storms can frequently blanket the area early in the season, leavening it inaccessible until late spring and even early summer. It's a unique area and one not to be missed. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the flat spots to camp. There are not a lot of fire rings as this area is frequently under a fire ban because of the tall grasses. One bar of Verizon LTE fades in and out.
