Trail Overview

Bonneau Ferry Wildlife Management Area covers over 10,000 acres of pine savannahs, bottomland hardwoods, wildlife openings, wetlands, and reservoirs. Recreational opportunities range from hunting and fishing to bird watching, hiking, and viewing the area's rich cultural attributes, such as the ruins of the Comingtee Plantation House and Rice Mill. Bonneau Ferry WMA has four lakes open to non-motorized boating and fishing. Bonneau Ferry may temporarily close for special hunts that can be found online on the SC DNR website. Make sure to double-check that the property is open before visiting. All impoundments are closed from November 1 - February 8th each year for the waterfowl season. This trail is an extension or alternate route for the 'Perimeter Loop - B' trail. This trail offers the ability to get a closer look at the waterfowl commonly seen in the wetland area. There are many pullouts and boat launches along the route. At the start of the trail is a large open field that has a dock and boat launch to take your non-motorized boat deep into the heart of the wetland area. If you do not have access or time to use a boat to see the wetland area, the trail circles the perimeter and offers a few glimpses into the large wetland area that makes up the majority of Bonneau Ferry WMA. The trail does connect back to the main road via Airport Road although it is not shown on the map!

Difficulty

The road is a hard-packed gravel road that was recently graded and re-graveled by the onsite DNR office. There are no obstacles on the trail. I drove the trail in the rain and there was no flooding or mud to be concerned with at the time of publishing. ATVs are not permitted on the roads on the property at this time.
