Trail Overview

River Road West follows the Rio Grande in the southwestern area of the Big Bend National Park backcountry. Along the trail, you will find various established backcountry camping sites. These sites do require reservations, so please check with park staff or online at recreation.gov. This trail primarily consists of a fairly maintained dirt road with several hills, loose rocks, and ruts. Four-wheel drive is recommended, but if conditions are dry, a high-clearance vehicle may complete this trail. The trail can be traveled through either side, but be aware that sections of the trail may be too narrow for 2 vehicles, so backing up may be required. Motorcycles frequent this area and should have no issue.
