Trail Overview

County Road 240 is a 9-mile-long full-width graded dirt road. It's smooth, hard-packed dirt, with nice views of all the surrounding green hills and mesas and pink sandstone layers. It's really scenic in a landscape with contrasting pink and green colors. The east end starts off of South Elks Road. It goes past Butler Wash and accesses a hiking trail to check out the Anasazi cliff dwellings within Butler Wash. There are lots of intersections to access tons of other unmarked 4x4 routes and the entrance to the Combs Ridge Descent, which is a really scenic intermediate 4x4 route. The west half of the road is less maintained and graded and becomes a bit bumpier with embedded rocks, but is still really easy. It's a bit sandy in the second half as well. It goes along the rim of the mesa, where you get a crazy high-up view overlooking the highway and Combs Ridge over the edge of the canyon wall. There are viewpoints along the way and a great camp spot with a view at the very end.

Access Description

The Butler Wash/Brushy Basin area is off of Highway 95 west of Blanding, Utah. There's an extensive network of dirt roads to explore off of South Elks Road that is used for camping, OHV use, and hunting access. This area is less frequently trafficked on a mix of BLM and Utah State Trust Land. It's a high desert terrain that can see extreme heat in the summer and snow in the winter, so it is best in fall and spring.
