Trail Overview

Baker Hogs Back Road is a 3.9-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 of 10 in Juab County, Utah. The Baker Hogs Back Loop (Baker Springs, Hog Back Road, and Right Fork) is known for two major attractions. The first is the Hot Spring near the intersection of Baker Hots Springs Road and Baker Hogs Back Road. The second is the Fumarole Butte just off the Baker Hogs Back Right Fork. Baker Hogs Back Road may be traveled in either direction and is an east/west crossing of the Hogs Back. The track is well defined in the hard pack as an impressioned track in the rocky topsoil. Generally, ATVs/SxSs utilize the entire loop, while 4x4s and full-size vehicles just run out and back to the attractions. Located on the east end of the trail are the Baker Hot Springs. The hot springs are a set of three pools constructed to catch the slightly sulfurous water from a scalding-hot source a few hundred feet away. Heated by volcanic activity that led to the creation of Fumarole Butte, a lifted section of the landscape that the road to the spring parallels, water emerges from several springs throughout the area. The pools, a set of three concrete tubs each large enough for several people if bathers are willing to get comfortable with each other, sit in an area where the hot stream and a cooler flow both mix. Soakers can open or divert the flow from either into each of the tubs in order to adjust the temperature. For this reason, soakers may want to bring extra towels to help plug up inflows of either. The springs are located on public land and there is no fee to visit the springs. Camping is permitted in the area, though the area is dusty, shadeless, and exposed. Some of the surrounding land is private, so campers should be aware of not entering private property. After visiting the spring (or before), venture west on Baker Hogs Back Road and visit Fumarole Butte. There is a trail that can be hiked to get to the top of the butte. The nearest services are located in Hinckley or Delta, both to the east of this area. Cell phone service is intermittent.
