Trail Overview
Chain Reaction is a very difficult trail recommended for experienced riders only. This is a 1.2-mile point-to-point trail rated 9 of 10 located within the Sand Mountain Open Riding OHV Area. Chain Reaction starts off in a sandy wash directly off the fence line trail. An easy run up the wash leads to the gatekeeper obstacle a large waterfall. This is just a sign of what's to follow. With obstacles named "The Rapids" and "The Wall" drivers should be listening to Heavy Metal instead of hearing what may be bending metal. The gatekeeper obstacles can be bypassed by entering into the wash a little further south but if the rig is not capable of negotiating it, it doesn't get any easier. The trail can be run by following the lower line by staying in the wash or by following the upper line which follows the lip above the wash. The lower line is full of serious obstacles that require careful wheel placement and balance. The lower line contains a series of waterfalls and narrow climbing corners. Throw in a couple of large boulders to maneuver around and you have Chain Reaction. To get to the upper line drivers must negotiate a very slick near-vertical wall. The upper line presents just as many challenging obstacles. Very skilled drivers in heavily modified full-size rigs have successfully negotiated it, but few of them escaped body damage. Many rigs have had big fails here. Expect intermittent cellular coverage while in the depths of the canyon. The nearest services are located in Hurricane.
