Trail Overview
East Portal is a side road off Murdock Basin Road that heads down to a small seasonal reservoir and a waterfall. The road is rough and rocky, and for most of the road, lower clearance vehicles must use caution. Towards the bottom of the descent, the road switchbacks five times before straightening out again; these switchbacks are wide and have plenty of room for larger vehicles, though a couple of them are rocky--plenty of dispersed camping at the bottom and a couple of sites along the road leading down. There is a possibility of some fallen trees as there was a lot of deadfall in the area when I was there, so be prepared. This trail is open year-round but may be inaccessible in the winter and spring due to snow.
