Johnny Canyon

Trail Overview

Johnny Canyon is a 4.2-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 of 10 located in Iron County, Utah. Johnny Canyon extends from State Line Road to the Utah/Nevada border. Once the trail crosses the border into Nevada it becomes Hacketts Ranch Road. This single-track trail climbs more than 1000' in a steady uphill climb for 3.5 miles. Do not follow the main wash as it will lead to a box canyon. Just to the north of the wash is the trail access climbing the hill. You will have to pick your way across the scrub due to multiple trees down on the trail, but it is passable. Dropping back down into Johnny Wash the trail becomes less defined as travelers must pick their way up the wash for the next mile or so sometimes avoiding large rocks. Then the climb begins up the canyon. Just before crossing the state line, there is a left-hand trail that leads to an open ridgeline with vista views. At the beginning of the trail is the Johnny Mine one of several mines located within the State Line Mining District with the State Line Mine located just up the Rice Canyon wash to the north. Keep your eyes open this is wild horse country, and they can generally be seen on the open meadows above the trail. There is no cell service along this trail and the nearest services are in Enterprise or Newcastle, Utah to the east or Panaca, Nevada to the west.

Trail consisting of loose rocks, dirt, and sand with some slick rock surfaces, mud holes possible, no steps higher than 12". 4WD may be required, aggressive tires are a plus.
