Trail Overview
The Maze is a 1-mile point-to-point trail rated 8 of 10 located within the Sand Mountain Open Riding Off Highway Vehicle recreational area. The Maze is one of the mountain's must-do trails for those who enjoy a more technical and hard-core challenge. This trail is not for those that are bothered by steep ascents and descents, extremely off-camber situations, and exposure to 1,200-foot cliff edges. Although only a mile long the main route is rated 8, however, there are so many alternate 9 or 10 rated obstacles along the route to name. The trail earns its name as it winds through over, and around "V" notches, slick rock waterfalls both going up and going down. The gatekeeper obstacle is named "The Drop" for its steep multistep drop into the trail and if you glance down to your right between two rocks notice you are within a few feet of a cliff that is 1,000 feet above the valley below. With obstacle names choices such as "You Got to Be Nuts" or "You Got to Be Totally Nuts", Flipper and "The Soup Bowl" this trail will not disappoint those up to the challenge.
