Trail Overview
VJ trail is a short trail in the San Rafael Swell near Temple Mountain that has some moderate obstacles and scenic views of the surrounding desert cliffs and canyons. The south end of the trail starts from 843 at a stack of cairns when the trail exits the wash. It starts as a fun fast and flowy single track in smooth dirt under the surrounding mesas with tight twisty turns, going up and over smooth desert hills. Then it drops into a rock slab wash and becomes more difficult. The next section of trail is like a narrow rocky canyon with rock ledges and moderate obstacles. There are small trees and rock walls on either side of you, which makes the obstacles harder as you can only pick from so many lines. Some of the rock ledges are like a ramp, and are good practice for this type of terrain. This trail is a similar difficulty to the Orange Trail, and is a fun way to make a day loop from 5 Miles of Hell back to Temple Mountain Road. There are also sections of loose rock climbs and a few sandy washes. The north end of the trail leaves the rocky wash and meanders in easy dirt single track again before ending at the Green Trail, which is an easy bailout back to the motorcycle trailhead.
