Trail Overview

White Lightning is a 2.4-mile looping trail rated 7 of 10 located in Uintah County, Utah. White Lightning is one of the newer trails in the area and not as well-known as many of the others. There are those who say that this is Vernal's version of Moab's Hell's Revenge Trail. The trail is definitely designed for excitement and challenges. The main trail may be rated 7, but there are multiple 8-10 rated optional obstacles for those that feel up to the challenge. The trail contains numerous slickrock climbs and descents, several huge ledges, and some features bordering a 100-foot cliff which add additional excitement to this trail. The Clamshell towards the end of this trail is one of the more notable obstacles that demands total commitment to make it out of this super steep climb out of a 3-sided dish. This trail is recommended for experienced drivers only. The trail is packed with grand panoramic views of winding slickrock/sandstone roller coaster slopes with distant views of the Steinaker Reservoir and the City of Vernal. Cell phone service is intermittent.

Access Description

Route was mapped during the Vernal Rock Rally 2023 which was led by local guides. None of the photos of vehicles are of my vehicle. I felt it was necessary to show the perspective of the obstacles.
