Trail Overview

Ward is a 6.3-mile long single track in the Coconino National Forest south of Flagstaff, Arizona, in the Kelly Motorized Trail System. Most of the trail is made up of many rocky sections, with big boulders embedded in the trail and big loose rocks to watch out for. The rocks are like huge loose bowling balls that can ping you sideways. You'll go over several giant boulders and big slabs of rock, which is sometimes volcanic rock. There are a couple of shelfy sections, but the trail is mostly flat without much elevation gain. It winds through the pine trees a lot, with lots of tight curves. There isn't one singular large ledge or obstacle that could be a crux of the trail, it just has a lot of big rock faces and small ledges that would be hard for the inexperienced rider. You'll go through several unmarked intersections where having a GPS is quite helpful. Most of the difficulty is on the northern half of the trail. The southern half of the trail widens up like a jeep road, with sections of single track that duck off of the road and reconnect. Autumn is a great time to ride here when the temperatures cool down, but there are also lots of pine needles on the ground at this time of year that make it hard to see the trail and the hidden loose rocks.
