Trail Overview
Baca Traverse sits in the foothills of the Capitan Mountains and starts out with some minor off-camber rutted areas that are a combination of rocks and dirt. The initial ascent opens up to a more rocky surface and provides a rock garden with some steps and the option of several different lines to choose from. Some of the steps are just over 12" with some larger loose rocks on the surface. The rocky surface again changes back to a combination of rock and dirt with areas that are rutted or provide rocky tracks with bypasses. There are multiple small rock gardens along the route that is easy to navigate. The trail then changes to a smoother dirt track that is showing signs of overgrowth, with open meadows and great views but potential for soft, slippery mud. There are several areas good for dispersed camp spots, just be aware of fire dangers in the area. Cell service was weak with many areas having no service, and weak service in others. The trail is primarily one vehicle wide, specifically at the rock garden towards the entrance, but there is room to pass if necessary. The trail will be passable by most 4x4s if taking the easier lines but offers some obstacles for modified vehicles.
