Trail Overview
This trail climbs 2000 feet in elevation, as you move across the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument and through the Paiute Wilderness towards Black Rock Mountain, elevation 7365 feet. After crossing the top of the mountains, the trail drops down into the draw where the cabin is found. The Black Rock Stone Cabin on the west end provides a glimpse into a bit of the history of this area. There is a small creek near the cabin. The cabin sits in the draw between Mount Bangs and Black Rock Mountain. The trail gets a bit rocky as you get near the cabin. Evidence of erosion exists on the road as well. It's not hard, but adds a bit of challenge to the ride. On the east end, at Maple Canyon, the trail begins in the valley between Little Wolf Pass and Black Rock Mountain. The scenery in this area of Northern Arizona is beautiful. You're a short ride from Mesquite, NV and St. George, UT. A nice long ride will take you to Hurricane, UT, or to the Grand Canyon's north rim. You're high enough in the backcountry to smell the pine trees. In late April when we rode the trail, it was dry and dusty, but there was still snow on some of the north slopes. If you do ride into Utah, you will need to get the new required Education Course Certificate. In February of 2023 Utah began enforcement of a new law, which requires an online education course for all off-roaders. The free course is available online. Google "Utah OHV Education Course," and the free test will pop up. It's an easy test that will only take 15-30 minutes, and it's required for all off-roaders, Jeeps, SXSs, dirt bikes, and ATVs. Kids under the age of 18 will have to take the Youth Education Test at the same site. After completing the test, print out the certificate to carry with you which shows you completed the course. We have taken it, and it's really no big deal. Good reminders about trail etiquette and trail preservation.
