Sand Flats Road

Trail Overview

Experience Sand Flats Recreation on this half-day trail. There is free camping available in scenic Porcupine Rim Campground which is on national forest land. Sand Flats road is an access road to Hell's Revenge and Finns & Things. There is a small fee to access this road. Surrounded by vibrant mesas and the La Sal Mountians, Sand Flats Road is one of the most popular recreation destinations in Moab. Sand Flats road, within the picturesque Sand Hills Recreation Area, is an 18- mile unpaved road. A one-day pass for private vehicles is $5, a 7-day pass is $10, and an annual pass is $25. Out of state ATVs or UTVs require a permit. OHV permits are valid for 12 months and cost $30. Passes and permits are available online only. As of January 1, 2023, all OHV operators must complete the Utah Off-Highway vehicle education course, also available online. Sand Flats has more than 140 individual campsites on a first-come, first-serve basis at a fee of $15 per vehicle per night. Free camping is available at Porcupine Rim. Six campgrounds are reservable online. Campsites are equipped with toilets, picnic tables and fire rings. NOTE: there is no water available in the campgrounds. Take care to pack in all of the ater you will need for the duration of your stay. Sand Flats road offers access to two hugely popular off-road trails; Hell's Revenge and Fins and Things. Terrain on both trails is hazardous and recommended for experienced drivers only.

Difficulty

Easy. A wide, well-maintained road in the recreation area. Any car can do this part. It's a little rougher road once in the forest, but is still quite easy unless you run into snow or heavy rain\ in the fall and winter. Our Cherokee Trailhawk did it all quite easily.
