Trail Overview
The Old Spanish Trail is one of the longer tracks in the area and features amazing views of the mountains to the west, grasslands at the north, and a fun desert feed before getting closer to the mountains at the southern end of the trail. The surface changes several times from dirt to rocks and is in overall good condition with only a few areas having minor ruts. There are a few short grades with loose rocky surfaces and some small rock gardens with steps/drops right at 10 inches in overall height. The trail does have a couple of small, sandy washes that are soft and sections where the surface is primarily sand for short distances. Areas of this trail may be very slippery or soft after heavy rains and the washouts will potentially be shallow water crossings. The trail is just over single-vehicle-width with room to pass if needed for a majority of the track. Cell service is moderate with some small areas having very weak or no service. Dispersed camping is permitted after the first 8.5 miles from the north starting point where FSR-86 intersects FSR-991. This is a point-to-point trail that connects from FSR-378/Wildcat Run at the north and runs south to FSR-225/Springtime. There are several motorized spurs that run to the west off the main track with several of them leading to designated hiking trails and additional dispersed camping areas.

Difficulty
Drivers can expect some shallow ruts, loose rocks, and small grades along the trail. There are a few sandy washes and sections where the surface is softer sand. Rock steps and some loose rocks under 12 inches will be the largest obstacles along the trail. Most high clearance AWD and 4x4 vehicles will traverse the trail without issue.
