Cove Mountain Road (FS# 40068)

Trail Overview

Cove Mountain Road, moving south to north, leaves the Koosharem Ranger Station/Guard Station and moves around the west side of both Monument Peak (11,050 feet) and Cove Mountain (10,695 feet) and crosses Magleby Pass (10,502 feet). It connects to Monroe Mtn Rd on the north end. The views of other mountains in the distance and the valley below are fantastic. We saw deer up here, and later in the year, it's likely you'll see elk. The forest shows damage from a wildfire that happened several years ago, and there are a lot of downed trees. To the Forest Service's credit, they're stacking some of the downed timber in piles and burning it when they can, thus cleaning up the forest. One small part of this trail crosses private property, but access is granted. The boundary is marked with a cattle guard, so there are no gates to open. In mid-June, there was some residual snow along the sides of the road in places, but the trail was open. In February of 2023, Utah began enforcement of a new law, which requires an online education course for all off-roaders. The free course is available online. Google "Utah OHV Education Course," and the free test will pop up. It's an easy test that will only take 15-30 minutes, and it's required for all off-roaders, Jeeps, SXSs, dirt bikes, and ATVs. Kids under the age of 18 will have to take the Youth Education Test at the same site. After completing the test, print out the certificate to carry with you which shows you completed the course. We have taken it, and it's really no big deal. Good reminders about trail etiquette and trail preservation.

Difficulty

Heavy rain or spring run-off will make this trail muddy, and it will have areas of erosion. Otherwise, its a pretty easy ride.
