Trail Overview

Racetrack Cutoff is a short fun route with a few varying challenges to overcome. There are deep ruts and deep potholes, short and steep inclines with loose rock, and early in the season, or during a wet season, there may be some mud holes to traverse. Overall, the trail is narrow with a few spots that widen out well enough to pass or turn around, but those spots also contain some of the largest obstacles.

Access Description

The main problem to watch for is that while this trail is marked on some forest service maps, this trail is not marked on the ground. It is labeled as Alvies Bench (FR 70192) from the east side of the trail (see the attached photo of the trail marker). If accessing this trail from the west side, there really is nothing on the ground to identify when the trail has transitioned from Alvies Bench to Racetrack Cutoff. Some maps may show a split in the trail, however no such split exists along the trail. The actual trail will follow the south end of the split on some maps.
